Faith-filled adventures for 7-11's that are dyslexia-friendly

Over the last year, it's been an honour for us at Sarah Grace Publishing to publish not one, not two, but now three books in a children's series that promotes faith, friendship, adventure and the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Supernaturals Series by Andy Robb is a wonderful collection of dyslexia-friendly books that follow an ambitious and vibrant group of friends who are seeking to discover more about God's power. Written for 7-11's, but these delightful stories can be enjoyed by the whole family at bedtime or while cuddled up on the sofa.

To celebrate the release of the third in the series, The Supernaturals and the Divine Downloads, we caught up with Andy for an exclusive on the friends' latest antics.

Why did you write The Supernaturals books?

In The God Files NIV children’s Bible, which I produced for Hodder Faith, I drew upon the exploits of characters in the Bible (I called them agents God) so that children could learn from their adventures and endeavours and become effective agents of God themselves.

This led to me wanting to write a book series which helped children see what being a follower of Jesus looked like in the 21st century.

And so, The Supernaturals was born. A gang of five children who are seeking to live for Jesus in their everyday lives.

The strap line to this book series is ‘God’s power isn’t just for grown-ups!’ because I was keen to introduce children to the dynamic Holy Spirit-inspired life they can read about in the book of Acts. Christianity is all about the supernatural – it’s about God, after all – but often the church has related the spiritual reality of God to the pages of the Bible and left many with a dry faith. Bookshops, cinemas, TV and the internet are alive with counterfeit (and dangerous) supernatural representations. It’s vital that our children get to experience the real thing.

The Supernaturals not only operate in the gifts of the Spirit (I call them superpowers in the books) but in the fruit of the Holy Spirit. This is all woven into the fun and captivating adventures this group of friends have in each story.

This is the third in the series to be published, how have you felt people have responded to them so far?

I’ve received encouraging responses from those involved in children’s ministry as a resource to add to their toolkit. I’ve also received great feedback from children who love the characters and the stories. Parents and grandparents are also telling me that this is just what they’ve been looking for to help the children they know and love live fully for Jesus.

You draw your own illustrations, which do you prefer? Drawing or writing?

They’re both very different processes, so they both have their merits. My background is that of a cartoonist and illustrator so that’s something I’ve always enjoyed. Writing enables a different kind of creativity whereby I can create a world into which I invite the reader. As a result, they can therefore bring alive my words according to their imagination.

How much does Scripture inform the adventures The Supernaturals get up to?

Completely! The Bible is the bedrock upon which the stories are based. Each book threads biblical teaching through the narrative. I also include a teaching element in each book to explain the key theme. Inspired by the Holy Spirit and founded on scripture, my prayer is that these books will inspire and equip children to live dynamic lives for Jesus.

So, there’s been three, dare we ask if there’s a fourth…?

Absolutely! In fact, I’m writing it at the moment, and it’s entitled The Supernaturals and the Extraordinary Expedition. It majors on the miraculous, so look out for it this summer.

All of The Supernaturals books are published in the Grace dyslexic typeface. Why did you feel it was important that your books were dyslexia-friendly?

It’s wonderful that the Grace Font makes these books accessible to children for whom reading might normally be a bit more challenging. Very important.
